The Lushootseed Language Department teaches eight
classes at Tulalip Elementary School, reaching 181 students. The classes
range from Kindergarten to Fifth grade. The teacher-student ratio is about
one to five, resulting in a quality experience and greater learning. At
Tulalip Elementary School 85% of the student population is Tulalip. For the K-2 grade range,
Michelle Myles and Rebecca Posey can be found in the Art room. This
classroom is used by the Art teacher, Sarah Brown, who helps control
students behavior and participates in activities with the students. She has
opened the doors to her classroom for our teachers to use.
For the 3-5 grade range,
Natosha Gobin and Tillie Jones can be found teaching in their own
classroom. The opportunity to have our own classroom has opened many
learning paths for the students. We are able to decorate the classroom in
all Lushootseed materials so that the teachings are reinforced on the
walls.
This teaching style is new
to our staff, since we are viewed as specialists instead of guests. Now the
students come to our classrooms instead of us coming into theirs. They are
immersed in the language as soon as they step foot into the classroom.
Classes are taught Monday through Thursday, starting at 9:20 am and
sometimes finishing at 12:55. It is challenging since there are two
separate classes in the classroom at each 50 minute time frame, but we feel
that it will benefit the students learning and retention. We would like to
thank the Principal of Tulalip Elementary, Theresa Iyall, and the staff for
allowing us to try out this style of teaching.

The teachers
have been able to place numerous Lushootseed learning tools on the classroom
walls so that the children are immersed in the language as soon as they walk
in for class.
